USCG Auxiliary Offers One DAY Seminars in

Boating Safety Certification, Local Knowledge, and Navigation

 

 

Flotilla 20-02 of the Morehead City Coast Guard Auxiliary has announced its winter schedule for one-day classes and seminar offered to the public.  All classes will be taught by certified personnel of the Auxiliary and will begin at 8:30 AM.  All seminars will be taught at Carteret Community College – Student Union Building located at 3505 Arendell Street, Morehead City, NC.

ABOUT BOATING SAFELY (ABS):   

 

This one day boating class provides one with the knowledge necessary for satisfying the NC safety certification requirement.  Additionally many boat insurance companies will offer discounts to boaters who successfully complete the course.  Topics include boating law, safety equipment , rules for safe boating, aids to navigation (ATONS), and prevention of common boating accidents. The seminar is also suitable as a review for the more experienced boater.  Following completion of this course, an additional unit of study may be taken:  Local Knowledge (LK)

 

 LOCAL KNOWLEDGE  (LK)  

 

One unit of additional study requiring successful completion of ABS or knowledge of boating by the participant.  Topics include the following:  History of Morehead City, Beaufort, Down East, etc.  A study of local charts used for in these areas, fishing hot spots, dangerous areas, conduct of vessels, lights and shapes, distress signals and much more.

 GPS-FOR MARINERS (GPSFM):

 

This course is designed for the weekend navigator and is the result of a cooperative effort between the textbook author, publisher, and the Auxiliary.  Participants who already own a hand held GPS are invited to bring them to the class but it is not required.

 

SUDDENLY INCOMMAND (SIC

 

This four hour seminar is designed specifically for boaters who are not normally at the helm and who, because of unexpected circumstances, must take command to bring the boat safely under control and/or back to port.  Per sufficient request a class for women only may be offered.
